The Mystery of The
Shane Holster |

My reason for this writing
this is due to the many inquiries I have received in the last 8 years and I
wanted to respond to other comments concerning this style holster.
About ten years ago, due to the scarcity of
it, I decided to reproduce the Shane Holster. I questioned quite a few of my
collector friends that I have known for the last 20 years, but information on
this Holster is very vague.
To date, I have seen four (4) different styles as
follows. Same style conchos, 2 style conchos, stitched belt, no stitched belt,
Special lettering, Block lettering, completely different conchos on belt, (see
pic.) and all are considered original by the owners. I do not disagree with
this assumption, as when a manufacturer would deplete a certain item, such as
Conchos, Rivets, etc., they would replace it with what was available or make
other changes to continue production.
Example: I had received a Keyston Holster
for a small repair that was considered a Hoppy Rig, but in close examination, I
had found 4 small R/R rivets were used. This was undetected by the owner. A
close friend has a Shane Holster that looks like all the others, but the belt
has large oval scalloped conchos on it. ( see pic) I'm sure it is also an
original. It looks more like the holster belt that Allen Ladd had worn in the
movie.
I had decided to reproduce the Shane Holster that is pictured in
Jim Schleyer's Book Backyard Buckaroos pg. 17. and Rudy D'Angelo's Book,
Cowboys Gunfighters & Cap Pistols pg.20, which has long ago been
considered as an original. I have spent much time in researching old department
store catalogs including the Canadian Library and archives for any
advertisement containing a picture, but have found nothing. To my knowledge the
Shane Holster was never advertised or pictured. There has been some controversy
about what the original Holster looks like. Until I can find some factual
proof, I will continue to reproduce this one. |

Look closely at the
pictures in Jim's Book:
1.) The Conchos are different on Holster then on the
belt.
2.) The Belt has stitching along edges for decoration purpose
only.
3.) The Shane lettering on the Holster was designed specially for this
Holster.
4.) The Spots or Studs used on Holster and belt are 1/4".
I have tried
to make the best reproduction possible for those lucky collectors who own the
George Schmidt Allen Ladd Cap Gun and want a Shane Holster to complete their
display.
Any comments on this topic would be welcomed, especially from
collectors in Canada, as I and others believe that the Shane Holster was
produced there. |

This would be considered as a ONE-OF-A-KIND holster, due to the
large decoration on the holster pocket. This type decoration is not readily
available, but this holster can be made using a different type. Also rare are
