| 1897 Vanderman Steel Railroad Strong box used to
carry gold bullion during the late 1800's and into the early 1900's. This
strong box is 24 x 24 x 50 inches in size and weighs approximately 150 lbs.
This is being sold for pick-up at our store in Springfield -
it will not be shipped. The name plate of
the bottom front of the box says Vanderman Manufacturing Co. Willimantic, Conn.
Pat. July 13, 1897. It is made of 1/8 inch steel plates and on the top wood
staves are riveted to the steel as bumpers. This is an important piece of
Americana when huge gold bullion shipments were routinely made by
rail. |
